Jewish Coalition for Literacy

Inspired by Jewish values of social justice, the Jewish Coalition for Literacy (JCL) is dedicated to eliminating childhood illiteracy by mobilizing tutors, engaging parents and growing home libraries to help under-served public school children throughout the Bay Area. JCL recruits, trains, places, and supports volunteer reading tutors in under-served Title I public schools that have under-performing scores on state tests and large numbers of English Learner (EL) students. JCL also conducts workshops for parents so they can reinforce their children's literacy skills at home. JCL has around 270 volunteer reading tutors serving in over sixty public schools across the Bay Area, each volunteer tutors from one to four students.
