Prisoners Literature Project

Organization logo The Prisoners Literature Project (PLP) is a grassroots nonprofit organization that has been sending books to prisoners in the United States free of charge since the mid-1980s. Our mission is to promote literacy and education among those in prison and to facilitate social change, self-empowerment, and rehabilitation in the prison system. Our clients are indigent prison inmates who have limited access to books. We send books to them because we believe that everyone should have the chance to read, regardless of circumstance. The project is an all-volunteer effort that mainly relies on donations of books and postage money in order to function. PLP is located at the Grassroots House at 2022 Blake Street in Berkeley, California. PLP operates in partnership with Bound Together Books in San Francisco to send books to our clients.
